Terengganu is located along the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. To the north lies the Kelantan state, and to the south, Pahang. Terengganu covers around 12,995 square kilometers and comprises seven districts: Besut, Setiu, Kuala Terengganu, Hulu Terengganu, Marang, Dungun, and Kemaman.
Kuala Terengganu the state capital, is located on the banks of the Terengganu River which flows down from Lake Kenyir to the South China Sea. It features a blend of old and modern buildings and appears to have stood still in time, moving at a slow and relaxed pace. HOW TO GET TO TERENGGANU
BY COACH
Express coaches depart daily from Kuala Lumpur (7 hours), Singapore (9.5 hours), Johor Bharu (9 hours) and Penang (9 hours). The journey includes 2 rest stops or more along the journey for foods, refreshments and toilet stops. The most comfortable coaches (VIP) have 24-32 seats in a 2-1 seating arrangement. The seats are spacious with plenty of leg room. Most of the ticket counter only sell one way ticket, passengers may book return ticket plus tour through local tour operator. Night coaches arrive at Kuala Terengganu MPKT Bus Terminal at around 5.30am - 6.00am.
KL to KT:
Most coaches depart from Hentian Putra station (opposite PWTC). Choices of coaches include Transnasional, Konsortium, Maraliner, Sani Express, Adik Beradik, Sutera and Mutiara. Tickets cost about RM28 one-way.
Penang to KT:
Coaches like SP Bumi and Atieza depart daily at night from Komtar or Butterworth stations to KT. Tickets cost about RM30 one-way.
Johor Bahru to KT:
Coaches depart from Larkin station. Many choices available including Transnasional, Damai, Adik Beradik and Cepat Express. Tickets cost about RM34 one-way.
BY CAR
KL to KT (approx. 455 km): 2 option the coastal road or Jerangau Jabor
Highway 2 KL (Gombak Toll) on Karak.
Highway and continue with East Coast Expressway to Kuantan exit.
Highway 3 Kuantan exit to Kuala Terengganu (Coastal road to Kemaman, Dungun and Kuala Terengganu)(223km).
Highway 2 KL (Gombak Toll) on Karak Highway and continue with East Coast Expressway to Kuantan exit.
Highway 3 Kuantan exit to Bukit Besi (20+km) - turn left.
Highway 14 Bukit Besi turn off to Dungun/Ajil (114km) - turn left.
Highway 14 Dungun/Ajil to Ajil/Kuala Berang (42km) - turn right.
Highway 14 Ajil to Kuala Terengganu (35km).
Singapore/Johor Bahru to KT (approx. 562 km):
Highway E2 Head north on the North-South highway and exit at Yong Peng
Highway 1 To Labis and Segamat turn right
Highway 12 To Kuantan
Highway 3 Kuantan to Kuala Terengganu (Coastal road to Kemaman, Dungun and Kuala Terengganu)(223km)
The coastal route: Highway 3 Head to Kota Tinggi, Mersing, Kuala Rompin, Pekan, Kuantan and Kuala Terengganu.
Penang to KT (approx. 460 km):
Highway 4 Penang on the East West Highway via Grik to Jertih - turn right.
Highway 3 Jertih to Kuala Terengganu.
Car Parks are available at Syahbandar & Merang Jetty (Redang Island/Lang Tengah Island), Marang Jetty (Kapas Island), Kuala Besut Jetty (Perhentian Island), Gawi Jetty (Kenyir Lake) and Kenyir Dam (Kenyir Houseboat). Approximate RM5.00 to RM10.00 per car per night.
